individual therapy

My relationship to myself is my relationship to others. If I am critical of myself I will criticize others. The more I like myself the more I like other people. Self-awareness is the critical factor in how we see the world. What we are aware of in ourselves, we can see in the world...
— Anne Kent Rush

Tuning in more deeply to your internal experience helps you understand the way you see yourself, others, and the world. Therapy supports this process by helping you get familiar with your thought patterns, the way you handle emotions, and the stories you tell yourself. This allows you to let go of old patterns that no longer serve you, connect with your innate capacity for wellbeing and joy, and ultimately live life more fully.

My approach integrates narrative, cognitive behavioral, and psychodynamic therapies, as well as mindfulness research. In short, I value insight and self-awareness; the ability to meet whatever we experience with compassion and curiosity; and the power of the stories we tell ourselves. I offer active listening, thoughtful inquiry, and a fresh perspective, while honoring your unique life path.

PSYCHOTHERAPY

Sessions typically begin with wherever you are that day, and I listen carefully for connections around themes in your life and your hopes for yourself moving forward. I am active, direct, and mindful of your goals. Psychotherapy lasts at least six months and continues as long as you find it to be beneficial and valuable.

This is helpful for exploring deep, complex areas such as relationship patterns; unconscious beliefs; a long-standing history of anxiety or other struggle; and processing trauma (old or recent) that interferes with life. Psychotherapy is also useful for people who have done little or no therapy previously, as well as people looking for greater self-awareness and ongoing support from a therapist.

SHORT-TERM THERAPY

Some people have already done a fair amount of therapy, or simply want to work with a therapist for a brief, focused period of time on one particular area. In this case I offer short-term therapy, which is more solution focused, may involve homework between sessions, and I am very direct in guiding the sessions to stay attuned to a specific goal. After meeting for 2-3 sessions I can tell you if this kind of therapy, often lasting 3-4 months, would be fruitful.
